Two Ceilings in Gloucester Abbey

Gloucester Abbey, now a Cathedral, where Edward II is (officially) buried, the crown giving no credence to reports that he survived his murder and lived on the continent for at least a decade. Above is the ceiling of the nave, in the mid-gothic style. Below, another ceiling in the decorated style.

We do many things better than medieval people, but ceilings is not one of them.

When did we give up on fan vaulting and why? Also, where are the Cosmati pavements of yesteryear?
