The Stonecarvers of Dangcheng

Dangcheng, China, is said to have a tradition of stone carving that goes back to the Han Dynasty. Over the past 30 years the town's workshops have become worldwide exporters of stone sculpture, happily crafting images of Jesus, Confucius, the Buddha, or just about anything else their customers want. Photographer David Gray recently visited the town and found the workshops largely idle by the worldwide recession, with more unsold sculptures than workers.
